No matter what season of motherhood you’re currently in, we can all agree that mom life is hard work.
It’s 2am feedings, and then another one at 5am. It’s trying to keep your cool while your toddler has a complete meltdown in the middle of the produce aisle. Motherhood is coming home after a long day of work to cook and clean, when all you really want to do is curl up on the couch with a big glass of wine. It’s juggling doctor appointments, parent-teacher meetings, playdates, piano lessons, and soccer games. It’s resisting the urge to slap someone when they question what you do all day as a stay-at-home mom.
We are so busy taking care of our families, that we often forget to take care of ourselves. I know I do.
Let’s face it; our never ending to-do lists rarely include self care. In fact, acts of self care are so few and far in between, I’d argue that self care has become a bit of a luxury at this point. Of course, I’m not saying that it should be a luxury. On the contrary, I believe self care should be a part of our regular routines, but I know that’s just not realistic for many busy and tired moms.
Well, if self care is going to be treated as a luxury, you might as well splurge a little. Am I right, or am I right? Okay, mamas. It’s time to treat yo’self!
10 Self Care Splurges Every Mom Deserves
1. Get The House Professionally Cleaned
Ideally, you would have your house professionally cleaned once or twice a month. That’s the dream. But I realize that isn’t financially possible for many families. Or, if you’re like me, you just want it done the “right” way. Let go of the reins a little and tuck away a little extra cash so you can splurge on a deep clean without having to lift a finger.
2. Invest In A Robot Vacuum
This is the self care splurge that keeps on giving. Robot vacuums are a busy mom’s best friend. These things are getting smarter and smarter. This iRobot Roomba is compatible with Alexa. That’s right. Cleaning your floors can be as effortless as bossing Alexa around, giving you more time for yourself. Go ahead and permanently scratch vacuuming off your cleaning check list, you know you want to.
3. Go To The Spa
A trip to the spa is a self care splurge that every mom deserves. I’m not talking about the reflexology place in the strip mall down the street from your house. No, I’m talking about escaping to a legit, fancy spa. Not knocking on the reflexology foot spas (I love a quick, cheap fix at my local foot spa), but there is a huge difference in quality. Let your husband take on baby/kid duty, while you treat yourself to a luxurious massage or a facial, or both! Make sure you go early to take advantage of the spas complementary facilities, such as the sauna, before your treatment.
4. Enroll In A Wine Club
Imagine never running out of wine. That would be freaking amazing. I HATE when all I really want after a rough day is a glass of wine and we’re out. The solution? Join a wine club and have the wine you love delivered to your front door. Wine clubs work like subscription boxes. Once you’re signed up, you will automatically receive a certain number of bottles every month or quarter depending on the terms.
5. Get The Works At The Nail Salon
You know those add ons they’re always trying to up sell you on at the nail salon? I usually skip all the bells and whistles, but when it’s nice to indulge every once in while. I’m talking about the extra massage time, the hot wax for hands and feet, the callus remover – all of it. Go big, or go home.
6. Cozy Up With A Weighted Blanket
If getting a good night’s sleep is on your wish list, consider investing in a weighted blanket. Many people swear by weighted blankets. Those that suffer from insomnia and anxiety disorders insist that weighted blankets help them get better sleep and ease their anxiety, among other things. Despite the lack of scientific proof, there is no denying the cozy and comforting affects these blankets provide. This one from Amazon works for both hot and cold sleepers!
7. Sign Up For That Class You’ve Always Wanted To Take
Whether it’s the fancy art class you’ve been wanting to try or a foreign language you’ve always wanted to learn, there’s no better time to learn something new then now. Learning something new allows you to stretch your intellectual or creative muscles, helps fight boredom, and builds self confidence. Enrolling in an on going class can help break up the monotony of your normal routine, plus you get to do something new and exciting!
8. Get Away For A Weekend
There is no better way to recharge your mom batteries than taking a vacation. You don’t need to leave the country or even get on a plane. A quick weekend getaway will do the trick. Head out solo or with your best girl friends. If you’re on a budget, check out getaway deals on sites like Living Social and Groupon. It’s still a splurge even if you’re ballin’ on a budget.
9. Treat Yourself To A Fancy AF Dinner
If you rarely eat out, or if you stick to restaurants with one dollar sign, splurging for a really nice meal could be quite the treat. Get a sitter and make it a date, or a really special girls’ night out. Throw on your favorite little black dress (or whatever makes you feel pretty) and head on over to that upscale restaurant you’ve always wanted to try. And don’t you dare think twice about shelling out for valet! You deserve that curbside service, mama.
10. Go To The Salon
Ditch your Super Cuts do for a stylish new look from a swanky hair salon. If you’ve never spent more than $30 for a cut, it’s time to invest in something different. Ask friends for recommendations or search online for a killer hair stylist and try something new. Go bold with a trendy new cut or understated with subtle highlights. The best part of the whole experience – the scalp massage and luxurious shampoo treatment, of course!
If you self care splurges just aren’t in your current budget, you should still find time to treat yourself in other ways.
